Light roots also negate the effects of gloom, which is a big issue, as all the enemies that attack you in the Depths will not only remove health but also limit your ability to refill it. Once you find a light root, you can activate it to illuminate the area and act as a travel point via your Purah Pad. This means you have to light your way by attaching bright bloom seeds to your arrows and fire them off into the darkness. The Depths are also the same scale as Hyrule, but with important distinction they are pitch black. This is where the Zonaite mineral resides and allows you to traverse underneath Hyrule to reach new areas above. Specifically, that of the new area called the Depths. However, it’s the third area now that has a big impact on the game. Not only is the Hyrule mainland sufficiently changed from the Upheaval, but you also have all the sky islands to explore. This is also because Hyrule is now at least three times bigger. The Depths are a new and dangerous world to explore. So building up your strength and abilities to explore to find new weapons and resources is absolutely key. They are tougher, cleverer and far better armed. You will need to build up your hearts and stamina quickly though, because enemies are no joke this time around. The towers are also useful this time as well, as once unlocked they can launch you into the sky to explore the various Zonai islands. When you start, you want to complete as many shrines as possible and find and unlock all the new towers. Which brings me on to my first piece of advice for new players to the game: shrines and towers.

This then feeds into the new Zonai shrines, which work like the previous Shrines in Breath of the Wild in terms of world navigation and upgrades, as these are now also actually useful exercises in learning how to manage your abilities. In that, instead of goofy physics puzzles everywhere, you actually need to figure out a problem and build something to fix it. The time reversal effect of Recall is useful to reach parts of the sky, as rocks fall and can be ridden back up, and when you are under a cliff perch, you can zoom up through it with Ascend.įinally, there is an Autobuild ability you unlock later on, which allows you to instantly recreate constructions you made previously by using Zonaite minerals or any objects in the near vicinity.Īll of this coalesces into a more coherent functional approach over Breath of the Wild. So to make a bomb arrow you attach a bomb flower, and off you go.įollowing that, there’s both Recall and Ascend to help with world navigation. That means bespoke bomb, fire or ice arrows are gone, and instead you combine arrows with various plants and other objects to change their attributes. This in part feeds into the new arrow setup, as you can attach various things to the end of arrows to change what they do. This is something that I hoped would have been fixed over Breath of the Wild, but the construction element gives you some interesting options in combat. NintendoĮven with this Fuse ability, weapons and shields are still sadly very fragile. That means you have to combine them with other objects to increase their attack power and durability.īuilding vehicles is quick and easy. This is necessary because since the Ganon mummy woke up-an event called the Upheaval-Hyrule’s weapons have now all become corrupted. Then there’s the ability to Fuse weapons. In short, I had zero control issues with Tears of the Kingdom.

It’s easy to construct and assemble objects and vehicles you just have to learn how. Some people who played the game early on complained that the Ultra Hand controls were awkward, and I can honestly say that this is nonsense. You can also combine these with Zonai devices, such as fans and rockets, which use separate battery power. The biggest one is Ultra Hand, which allows you to pick up and assemble objects and create vehicles. Instead, we have Rauru’s arm, and this has a new set of abilities. Functionally the Purah Pad offers much of the same world navigation as the Sheikah Slate, but the various abilities it had with being able to make bombs and stasis and the like are now gone. Instead, we have the Purah Pad-yes, she’s back, too. In short, the Sheika Slate and all of its abilities are now gone.

This brings me to the new abilities in Tears of the Kingdom and how they solve various issues that were present in Breath of the Wild. Not to mention the various Korok puzzles using Zonai text.

One nice touch is that the Zonai are not a new thing, as they were subtly telegraphed in Breath of the Wild with the Zonai Ruins and Barbarian Armor.

Not to mention that Rauru was already a different character in the previous games as well. Having this key part of Hyrule history revisited is definitely confusing, especially if you are a longtime player of the Zelda games. Link's new arm comes from the first Hyrule king and Zonai, Rauru.
